After winning the seventh series of X Factor in 2010, Matt Cardle enjoyed a Christmas Number 1 with ‘When We Collide’ and a string of Top 10 singles from his first two albums. After taking time out to work on his third album, Mr. Cardle is back – and he’s brought an ex-Spice Girl with him! I spoke with him to dig up the dirt…

The whole X Factor process has become such a phenomenon that every step is as dramatic as possible. Was winning everything you thought it would be?

I don’t really know what I expected to be honest, but I know that I didn’t expect to win! It has been crazy since but really enjoyable all the same.

Were you disappointed to part ways with Columbia Records?

It’s always a shame when things don’t quite work out the way you hoped, but for me it wasn’t really about leaving Columbia, it was about leaving Sony. I needed to be somewhere where I was a priority. It was the best thing I could have done. I’m now fully in control of my career and I’m really happy.

Your third album is out in October…

Well, I’m really excited about this album. I’ve pushed myself vocally. I’ve been developing my voice over the last year especially, and I’ve increased my range. There’s also a great diversity of tracks – some really in your face and up-tempo, others really sentimental.

You’ve appeared at G-A-Y before, what’s the best thing about performing there?

Last time I performed, the crowd were absolutely incredible. So warm and receptive. It’s always great to go back because it gives me an opportunity to find my eternally single manager Will a boyfriend!

Can we expect to hear some of your other hits on the night, too?
I’ve no idea what I’m going to perform yet, but Mel and I will have some surprises up our sleeves.

Your new song with Mel C is called ‘Loving You’ – are you singing to each other?

[Laughs] No comment!

We definitely caught a glimpse of you and Mel C in a lip-lock in the video. You kissed a Spice Girl! Can you divulge any gossip?

Let’s just say, she’s a great kisser.
